Become a KEDPLASMA new donor

Donating plasma is one of the most rewarding acts an individual can perform to help others.

Why start donating?

Did you know that most of the plasma components used in life-saving therapies cannot be obtained or created in a lab? That’s why we need you.

When you become a KEDPLASMA new donor you make it possible to develop and produce plasma protein therapies that save lives and enhance the quality of life of people suffering from severe and often rare diseases, disorders and conditions.

Your plasma donation can help treat severe and often rare diseases, disorders and conditions such as:

  • autoimmune conditions such as Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Myasthenia Gravis, Multiple Sclerosis, and more.
  • blood disorders like Hemophilia
  • liver disease
  • neurological disorders and strokes
  • severe burns

Living with hemophilia

Hemophilia is a blood clotting disease that is usually inherited from a family member. It can lead to spontaneous bleeding after an injury or surgery. The blood of a person suffering from Hemophilia has low volumes of a protein called clotting factor, which makes it very difficult to stop both internal and external bleeding.

Hemophilia can seriously impede a person’s quality of life. It can cause chronic joint pain and brain bleeds that can lead to seizures or even paralysis.

Plasma donations are key to helping people suffering from hemophilia get the life-saving clotting factor they need.

DID YOU KNOW: It takes more than 1200 plasma donations a year to treat one hemophilia patient?

That’s why every single donation counts.

How does plasma donation work?

Plasma donation is different from whole blood donation. In plasma donation, your blood cells are separated from the liquid portion of the blood called plasma. The blood cells are then returned to your body along with some saline or albumin. This whole process, called plasmapheresis, can be broken down into four steps:

  • your blood is extracted and collected in a special machine
  • the plasma is separated from the blood cells through a process of centrifugation
  • the plasma gets collected and stored
  • your blood cells are returned to your body with some saline

Plasmapheresis is a perfectly safe process. Throughout your donation, you will be accompanied by a Plasmapheresis specialist.

Interested in knowing more about the donation process? Read our first donation step-by-step guide that explains the entire donation process from the moment you step into one of our donation centers to the moment you leave.

Who can donate plasma?

Are you wondering if you are eligible to donate plasma? Most healthy individuals can donate plasma if they are over 18 and weigh at least 110 pounds. On your first visit a medical examination will be performed to make sure that you are in good health and match our eligibility standards.
Because the plasma we collect from our donors is used in life-saving therapies and medication, we must maintain stringent quality control before, after, and during the donation process.

Become part of a community

At KEDPLASMA, we believe in the power of giving back. We know that every person is part of a greater whole and can help their community by doing small acts of kindness. For example, every year KEDPLASMA staff and donors organize food drives to deliver non-perishable food items to multiple charities. We couldn’t be prouder of our donors for stepping up to help their communities.

Why do we need you?

Plasma cannot be produced artificially. It is obtained only by the generous donation of healthy individuals for the eventual use of others in need.
