Specialty plasma donation programs

Did you know that most of the plasma components used in life saving therapies cannot be obtained in a lab? That’s why we need you.

What are specialty plasma donation programs?

Did you know that the antibodies in your plasma can be used in a wide range of medications? To help people suffering from various diseases and conditions, we have created our Specialty Plasma Donation Programs. These allow us to procure plasma enriched with special antibodies that help cure certain diseases like Rh-sensitization, rabies, Hepatitis B, and many more.

What specialty plasma donation programs can you find in our centers?

All our centers accept donations for Normal Source Plasma. If you have a certain blood type or have been immunized for certain diseases, you might also be eligible for one of 10 different specialty plasma donation programs nationwide.

Anti-D specialty plasma donation program

Purpose of the program

Create Anti-D plasma therapies that prevent Rh-sensitization, which can lead to hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN)

Benefits

Rh-sensitization occurs when the blood of an Rh-negative mother comes in contact with the blood of her Rh-positive child. This can trigger the mother’s immune system to produce antibodies that attach to the red blood cells of her Rh-positive baby. Without an Anti-D therapy for the Rh-negative mother, Rh-sensitization can lead to a disease called hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) that can result in the loss or serious illness of the child.

Eligibility

Have an Rh negative blood type (A- , B-, AB-, O-).

Be between the ages of 18 and 66 (people over the age of 66 require physician approval).

Women must be postmenopausal or surgically sterile by tubal ligation or hysterectomy.

Program-specific health screening is required to determine eligibility.

Commitment

Cannot donate whole blood or plasma at another facility.

Long-term commitment

Receive the DENOVO immunization.

Tetanus specialty plasma donation program

Purpose of the program

Create a treatment for those exposed to the Tetanus bacteria.

Benefits

Tetanus, also known as “lockjaw,” is a serious disease caused by the Clostridium tetani bacteria. Should patients not be immunized for the disease, they are given prophylaxis made with plasma that carries tetanus antibodies.

Eligibility

No prior vaccination for Tetanus within the past 10 years.

Commitment

Receive the Tetanus vaccine and continue on a regular donation schedule.

Enrollment will continue if the donor remains eligible to donate and their antibody levels remain above the usable threshold.
